Passing of James Sullins

Jim Sullins, NDTMA Founding Member and Fred Rhode Lifetime Honorary Member passed away on April 14, 2019.  His obituary follows:

Jim Sullins, 92 of Tulsa, Oklahoma passed from this life on Sunday, April 14, 2019 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He was born January 17, 1927 in Calvin, Oklahoma to his parents, James Oliver Sullins and Madge E. Dodd Sullins. Jim married the love of his life, Annabelle Sullins on September 17, 1956 and they shared in over 62 beautiful years together before her passing in December of 2018.

Jim is survived by his daughter, Leslie Sullins Pierce and her husband Ben of Pahrump, Nevada; his son, Tracy Richard Sullins of Atoka, Oklahoma; grandson, Thor Sullins of Tulsa, Oklahoma; and brother, Wayne Sullins and his wife Betty of Zavalla, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Madge Sullins; his wife, Annabelle Sullins; and one sister, Bernice Bolling.

Jim held several patents in the non-destructive testing industry. He was instrumental in the development of the “self-propelled crawler,” a machine that could be placed inside one end of a section of pipe. The machine then “crawled” down the pipe, paused at each welded joint, and turned on an X-Ray source, exposing a film strip on the outside of the pipe. Prior to this invention, X-Ray crawler machines had to be tethered and pulled back manually, and could not go long distances. This improvement allowed continuous inspection of much longer sections of pipe and was a great contribution to the non-destructive testing industry. He was an expert in the processing of X-Ray film and in the analysis of the film to identify defects in the welds.

In the late 1970s, Jim and Annabelle founded their own successful NDT supply business, Sullins, Inc, and he also traveled the world as a consultant. He was a member of ASNT (the American Society for Non-Destructive Testing) and founding member of NDTMA (the Non-Destructive Testing Management Association).
