Emerging Technology Considerations for a NDT Company – An Overview
Joseph Jaramillo, Davis Laboratories, Inc.
Among their many tasks, NDT business owners often function as their own IT (information technology) guy —researching and implementing a plan to provide the software, hardware and IT services required to make their business run efficiently and stay within compliance of state and federal laws. As companies grow, the need to outsource or hire dedicated IT staff becomes a cost-effective option. This paper discusses some of the technology challenges and solutions that NDT companies and their IT people face, with regard to voice, data, video, security and wireless services.

Selling and Marketing to the Refining and PetroChemical Industry
Whitney Strickland, Whitney Strickland & Co., LLC
Selling and Marketing to the refining and petrochemical industry is becoming a much more difficult task than in the past. Client companies have shut down the doors of letting the companies that serve them create relationships with their employees. That coupled with the advent of utilizing technology for the prequalification and bidding process can make it highly difficult for the service or product company that depends on these industries to survive. This presentation will highlight these new difficulties and explain them in detail along with how it is best for companies that want to work in these industries to think about what their selling and marketing strategies need to be in this current market.

Marketing Strategies for the Addition of New or Emerging NDT Technologies into Your Portfolio of Services
Bruce Pellegrino, GE Inspection Technologies
NDT technologies are constantly evolving – faster now than ever. Imaging capabilities from UT, ET, RT, Digital RT, RVI and Computed Tomography (CT) are becoming more common for field and factory-floor inspection tasks. This presentation discusses the benefits and value proposition for marketing the advance capabilities of nondestructive testing imaging.

National Source Tracking System Update
Andrew Mauer, USNRC
This presentation describes an important element of the radioactive materials security infrastructure, the National Source Tracking System (NSTS). The system was launched in late 2008 after several years of development. The NSTS maintains an inventory of all Category 1 and 2 sources in the U.S. Licensees are required to maintain their inventory data and report transfers online. This enhances security by allowing close tracking of the locations of sources, and identifying possible unauthorized transfers.
This presentation will focus on:
- deployment and implementation of NSTS, 2)
- credentialing for NSTS,
- potential expansion of the system, and
- user feedback.

Industry Initiatives in the Safety and Security of Radioactive Sources
Kate Roughan, QSA Global/Sentinel
With the many different enhanced security requirements being imposed and proposed by Regulatory Agencies, primarily NRC, industry has struggled to meet short deadlines to implement new security programs and processes. Industry has had to identify and implement the required infrastructure to support these new requirements, such as fingerprinting, source security in handling and transportation etc. With different Regulatory Agencies requiring different actions, it is difficult to assure compliance to all requirements and to assure there are not gaps on the coverage. Industry has been proactive in participating in several committees and workshops with Regulators to assure the requirements are really necessary based on risk and cost benefit analysis, and if necessary can be effectively implemented. This paper covers the Regulatory proposals and the ongoing initiatives industry is involved in to assure compliance.

Regulatory Lagniappe Potpourri – An Interactive Exchange
Roy Parker, Consultant
This will be a discussion of the world’s most exciting subjects, including non-controversial and more probably, controversial radiography regulations; efficient source tracking (or maybe lack thereof); increased controls –orders morphing into regulations; transportation – yours and theirs; aging of equipment means what; and what all. It is hoped that it will be exciting enough to be a freewheeling, bare knuckle, no holds barred, open forum with the entire group participating.

Live Long and Prosper: Safety Maximizing Turbine Blade Life with Process Compensated
Resonance Testing
Lem Hunter, Vibrant Corp
NDT plays a large role in the development and maintenance of today’s powerful and efficient turbine engines. The safety record of commercial aviation has continued to improve even as engines are asked to deliver ever more hours on wing. Process Compensated Resonance Testing (PCRT) is being used “cradle to grave” to ensure only the highest quality parts enter service and to maximize the useful life of these expensive and safety critical parts.

Advanced Testing Systems
Walter Weber, UTEX Systems
NDT has not kept pace with the rest of factory automation. Robots autonomously weld structures, assemble components, handle parts and report results to corporate databases. Components arriving in the NDT department routinely require manual handling, manual setup and C-scan systems remain mostly manual. In this presentation you will learn how inspection automation is being applied to NDT to close the technology gap.

Line Scanning Thermography: A Solution for Large Area Nondestructive / Non-Contact Inspection
Obdulia Ley, Physical Acoustics Corp.
This talk deals with an innovative thermography-based NDT method capable of wide area inspection. This technique, known as Line Scanning Thermography (LST), has successfully been applied to determine the thickness of metallic plates and to assess tube thinning. In this work, our efforts towards the applications of LST for the analysis of laminate composites will be presented. In this presentation the LST protocols developed for the detection of subsurface disbonds (delamination) in composite sandwich parts will be presented. The thermal images acquired using LST will be compared with ultrasonic c-scans.

Industrial Computed Tomography (CT) as an Inspection Tool for Airfoil Wall Dimensions in a
Production Environment
Rodney Warner, Pratt & Whitney – Austin
As airfoils used in turbine engines for flight power become more complex, with features that do not conform to traditional measurement techniques, new methods must be accepted into the traditional toolbox of nondestructive inspection methods. Computed Tomography (CT) addresses many of the issues associated with these challenges, but the lack of industry standards along with the expense of equipment and personnel has made CT an impossible solution for all but a few. Pratt & Whitney has overcome many of these issues for airfoil wall dimensional data by accepting discrete section data, using CT much like an ultrasound wall inspection. Obstacles to implementation included equipment usability and supportability in a shop floor environment, measurement accuracy and associated calibration issues. The PW-Austin CT Team has overcome these issues and developed an internal method for the inspection of airfoils for wall thickness dimensions for product acceptance.
