“Maximize Your Personal Potential”

Amy Schaden
Management Impact, Inc.

In order to maximize your potential, you must continually focus on improving yourself and your own skills and competencies. Personally, you must understand your strengths and weaknesses and continue to use them to your advantage everyday. Just because you have “made it” to a leadership position, doesn’t mean that your learning has peaked or ended. Just the opposite – it’s only just begun.

If you develop a passion for learning, you will never cease to grow. One of the keys to a fulfilling life is having the courage to be a lifelong learner. The more you learn, and the more you pass that learning on to others, the greater your chances for a prosperous and satisfying career.

Maximizing Personal Potential is a customized approach to leadership development. It takes information from your organization’s needs assessment and designs specific training courses to challenge those in need within your organization.

“Managing NDT Product Development”

George W. Rhodes
Avistar, Inc.

Developing products on budget and schedule, requires discipline, planning and critical resources. The process includes: a requirements definition, more than one technical approach, an intellectual property background search, a preliminary market analysis and proper experimental design with success criteria. Skipping any of these steps will usually lead to a costly failure. The skills needed to develop products are usually not identical with those required to run and expand a traditional NDT business, and the staff temperaments are radically different. The process will be discussed including examples of success and failure.

“Leasing – A Cost Effective Tool for Increased Sales and An Improved Bottom Line”

J. Len Sperl
Vision Financial Group

Many vendors as well as end-users fail to realize the benefits of leasing and how it can improve the bottom line of their respective organizations. The ability of vendors to offer quick, convenient, efficient and competitive financing for their products provides a total solution for their customers. The end-user will see how leasing can provide an alternative that may enable them to acquire much needed equipment, preserve lines of credit, better match cash flows and improve their bottom line. In today’s world, CASH IS KING. This presentation will provide vendors a look at the benefits of using leasing as a tool and how easy it is to embed a program within their sales presentation. For the end-user, we will discuss the benefits of using the alternative of leasing to make the correct decision for their particular situation. In both cases, vendor and end-user, the benefits will be clearly identified and through the proper use of leasing, each should see an improved bottom line.

NDT MANAGEMENT SESSION I

“Introduction to the NDTMA Management Training Program”

Jim Treat
Chuck Hellier

The session is intended as an introduction to a three module, three-year management training program developed by Chuck Hellier and Jim Treat under the auspices of NDTMA.

The management training program is designed to present relevant management topics to personnel who are currently in management positions and for those who aspire to become managers and leaders. While it will address effective management approaches for the NDT industry, it applies to other technical disciplines as well.

The program will begin with a half-day introductory session in 2005, followed by three full-day sessions, each in conjunction with an annual NDTMA conference starting in 2006 and concluding in 2008. As currently envisioned, the three-year cycle will be repeated starting in 2009. The introductory seminar in 2005 will be open to all annual conference attendees. Attendance at subsequent modules will be by registration on a fee basis. A certificate of attendance will be presented to individuals who attend each one-day seminar. For those individuals attending the three full-day sessions and successfully completing the assigned program exercises in all three modules, a Certificate of Completion of the NDTMA Management Training Program will be awarded.

“The Business Case for Reliability”

John Schultz
Allied Services Group

“It’s OK to get Excited about Maintenance” is the introduction we use for every presentation we give related to maintenance, reliability, and asset management. The reason for this is the overwhelming business case associated with doing maintenance and reliability right. Asset Management initiatives have been documented to have Returns on Investment (ROI) ranging from 4:1 to 50:1. In fact, many organizations have found that a Total Equipment Asset Management (TEAM) initiative has proven to be the best investment that they have ever made in their facility. In this paper, we will discuss and explore the “Business Case for Reliability” from several different angles:

What is ROI?

What are the elements of successful TEAM initiative?

What are the typical costs associated with each element?

Where are these costs offset with savings?

What areas can expect to see the most significant savings?

What types of savings are likely in each area?

What is the “typical” Rate of Return (ROR)?

What elements control ROR?

Where do you start?

Readers will gain a fundamental understanding of why a Reliability initiative makes financial sense for their business, what elements are essential for their success, what they can control, and how to start. If a plant already has a reliability initiative in place, but the results are not meeting expectations, calculating the business case may provide insight into why results are not being achieved.

“Industry Issues with Property and Casualty Insurance”

Mark Tedford
Tedford Insurance

Many industries have problems that are specific to that industry. The Non-Destructive industry is no different. It is an industry that has unique insurance problems. Understanding these issues is key to properly managing the risk your company faces and the costs of insurance premiums. I will identify these problems in Workers’ Compensation, General Liability, and Commercial Auto insurance and discuss other common risk management concepts so that the risk manager will understand what risks his company faces and be able to manage his or her insurance premiums.

”Military Specifications – How and Why They Have Evolved”

Jim Noonan
General Dynamics - Electric Boat

The presentation will cover military shipbuilding specification, and will explain how and why they have evolved.

“New Infrared System Design and Applications”

Gary Strahan
Texas Infrared

Recent developments in and advances in uncooled infrared technology are broadening the use of infrared systems in all industry. Permanently fixed mounted wireless systems are being used to look at Flare Systems, Critical Vessels, Tank Levels, Furnaces, Boilers, Electrical Substations, Prisons, Military facilities, Harbors, Building, and Rotating Equipment.

Uncooled systems for use in inspection of furnace tubes are only now commercially available. High-resolution sterling cooled infrared cameras are being developed to see SF6gas and hydrocarbon gas leaks. In the near future, these gas-imaging cameras will be able to quantify such leaks.

A new Ultraviolet imaging system has been developed for inspection of high voltage equipment and video footage will be shown at this presentation.

“Use of Automated Ultrasonic Testing (AUT) on Large Structures”

Hugh Howerton
RTI Energy Systems, Inc.

This presentation will show several uses of automated UT systems on welds in ferritic and on ferritic materials. The types of equipment will vary with the type of weld material, indications to be detected and the size of the part.

The systems that will be presented are Time of Flight Diffraction (TOFD), automated raster scanning on ferritic pipe, phased array line scanning on austenitic welds and automated line scans on austenitic welds. Examples of scans techniques and photographs will be presented detailing the application of the equipment on various structures.

Depending on the use of the equipment, attention to detail, use of experienced personnel and adequate spare parts, the automated UT system can be used to locate and evaluate indications. These systems provide instant results of the quality of the welds and also provide a record that may be viewed at a later date for further evaluation or used to compare pre-service results with periodic inspections during the life of the structure.
